Getting Better?

On their Sgt Pepper Album, the Beatles had a track called “Getting Better”.  “I’ve got to admit it’s getting better, a little better all the time.”  It’s actually a pretty optimistic song coming in the aftermath of WWII and what was then well into the Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union when everyone was waiting for nuclear war to break out (it almost did in 1962 during the Cuban Missal Crisis).

Should our expectation be that things will just keep getting better and better?  There was a theological movement that was very popular in the 19th and 20th centuries called Post-Millennialism.  The essential thrust of this teaching was that through the work of the Church and preaching of the Gospel and later the social ministries of the Church that we would usher in the Kingdom of God on earth and then Jesus would come back to rule.  This belief was in sharp contrast to much previous teaching in the early centuries of Christianity which saw this age ending with a big apocalypse and global destruction and time of great tribulation before the return of Jesus to bring about the Kingdom of God. 

Postmillennial preaching roughly corresponded with the optimism that accompanied the utopian vision of many in that same time frame.  Advances in technology and health care had many convinced that we would bring about a much better world through human effort.  For most, this all fell apart after two World Wars, the holocaust, the Cold War, and the nuclear age etc…

Where did the Apostle Paul stand in all of this?  It’s pretty clear from today’s reading in 2 Timothy 3 that Paul did not hold optimistic hopes for a world where things just keep getting better and better.  Paul gives no indication that he had a post-millennial hope of the kingdom being brought to completion solely through the efforts of the Church.  Paul warns that the “last days” would be days of difficulty: “People will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,  heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,  treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (vs. 2-4).

Paul paints a dismal and disheartening picture of where he sees the human race headed.  But against this backdrop of increasing sin and brokenness, Paul presents the followers of Jesus Christ, those who will follow both his teaching and example, as standing out from this world in all its sin and brokenness, equipped by God to do good works.

As I look at the trajectory of this world during my lifetime of nearly 60 years, I see little evidence that the world is capable of creating the utopian vision that many dreamers had or that the Church’s power and influence is becoming greater and leading the world closer to the paradise envisioned in the Kingdom of God vision of the Bible.  I see Paul’s stark predictions being lived out every day.  In the US the life expectancy rate is now shrinking due to “Deaths of Despair”- deaths caused by suicide, opioid overdoses, and diseases related to alcohol abuse.  I won’t take the time to give examples of all the things that Paul warns against.  A quick scan of the social science writings over the last 50 years from Christopher Lasch’s Culture of Narcissism to Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death shows that one does not even have to have a Christian worldview to detect that things are not getting better and are exactly as Paul said they would be.

As Christians how should we respond?  Do we throw in the towel and give up?  Of course not.  God is still saving people from this present evil age.  People are still turning from darkness to the light of Jesus Christ.  Even as Paul kept preaching the gospel even in the midst of his trials and persecutions, so should we.  We know how the story ends. Jesus will come and make all things new.  In the meantime, we are invited to do the work of showing people Jesus Christ.  Many will reject us and our message, but some will believe and follow.

I’m reminded of the story of the man who was out on the beach looking at thousands of starfish that had washed ashore.  He was picking them up one at a time and throwing them back into the water so that they might be saved.  A man came along and watched him throwing them one at a time.  He scoffed and said “There are probably millions of starfish on his beach and most will die.  What possible difference do you think you can make?”  The other man reached down and picked up one single starfish and returned it to the ocean.  “For that one, I made all the difference in the world.”

There are billions in the world who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior.  You and I can’t save them all today, but there is someone that you will meet today or tomorrow that you can share the hope of Christ with, and for that one, your efforts might make all the difference.

Song of SoNGS Introduction

King Solomon likely wrote the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon, which is considered one of the books of poetry in the Bible.  The book is written as a series of monologues between “Beloved” (her) and “Lover” (him), with some commentary from “Friends”.

Many have suggested that Song of Solomon is an allegory, pointing to how much God loves us, and how we should love God.  I completely dismiss this interpretation.  The book clearly describes the romantic love between King Solomon and one of his wives.  (Song of Solomon 6:8 mentions that at the time of its writing, there were 60 queens and 80 concubines.)

Even though the whole book is sexually suggestive, it repeatedly warns (in 2:7, 3:5, and 8:4), “Do not arouse or awaken love before it so desires.”  – presumably warning to wait for sex until marriage.

Godless Chatter

As a Special Education teacher, I usually chose to eat lunch in my classroom – not only so I could complete my work early and head for home the very second my duty hours concluded, but also to avoid all the gossip that was rampant in the teacher’s lounge. (There was much unwholesome chitchat among the teachers about problematic students and challenging parents, and I tried to avoid it; I would be lying if I said I had never joined in, but I tried to stay away also to avoid the temptation to gossip.) However, when my Special Education team decided through testing, observation, and collaboration that a certain student had progressed sufficiently and therefore no longer qualified for intervention services, his mother sought legal action to force the school district to continue his therapies. This led to innumerable meetings among his intervention team, which included oodles of hours to complain whenever the parent was not present. Though many of the staff’s grievances against her were legitimate, it was a very toxic and negative environment. I was especially disgusted by the way in which the atmosphere suddenly changed to small-talk chatter through seemingly-friendly smiles once the mother entered – the very same person who had been the source of much degrading talk just a moment before. Worst of all, whenever I was around such hostility, I felt that it negatively impacted my ability to be the loving, kind, student-focused teacher I wanted to be. It drained my energy, my love, my joy, my focus. 

Though I’m more than a decade removed from the teacher’s lounge now, I’ve discovered another rampant source of dissentive arguments: social media. I’ve learned the hard way that it is nearly impossible to change the mind of someone via a FaceBook thread, and that otherwise-kind folks can be exceptionally harsh and judgemental when they’re behind a screen rather than face-to-face. Most likely some of you have noticed this sad reality as well. 

In 2 Timothy 2:15-17,22-24, Paul reminds Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene… Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful…” Paul adds that this kind of quarrelsome, godless chatter is from the devil. 

We have a higher calling as followers of Jesus, and especially as leaders, to watch our mouths. We must conduct ourselves in such a way that there is nothing of which to be ashamed, living according to biblical principles. As representatives of Jesus, if we are engaging in negative talk, we are distracting from the message of Christ and even tearing down the body of Christ. Such behavior also takes away our joy and our focus on the task God has set before us. Though the sinful natures in us might want to join in with the crowd, we are called to flee those desires and instead seek after “righteousness, faith, and love” as we are “kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.”

In the earlier verses of this chapter (3-9), Paul is reminding Timothy to work hard and keep focused on the goal of serving his Savior. He compares this suffering and dedication to the steadfastness of a soldier, the drive of an athlete, the persistence of a farmer, and ultimately, the dedication of Jesus Christ. Though Paul is in chains, he reminds Timothy that the Word of God is NOT chained – the Good News still needs to be shared! Soldiers, athletes, farmers all have to work very hard to reach their goals. They can’t afford to be distracted by foolish talk, and neither can Timothy be chained to negative chatter or anything else that holds him back from fulfilling his calling. It is important for all of us to keep focused on the goal of serving Jesus in each decision and action, whether big or seemingly small.

Think about your break room conversations or your social media behavior… would people know by your actions that you are a follower of Jesus? 

What are the “evil desires of youth” from which God has set you free?

What kinds of things do you need to stay away from or spend more time doing  in order to better focus on the work God has in store for you?

Bearing Fruit

A few years ago, my friend from church, Terri Tschaenn, gave me a single piece of a cactus that was broken off from her huge cactus plant. I put it in a small pot not knowing what to expect, and I have to say that thing has grown so many shoots and sprouts and whatever new chunks of cactus might be called…..I am now onto a third pot myself and it has been pretty cool to see that thing grow and spread! While I am still learning to be careful with the nasty little prickers, I can tell I am going to have cactus to share! So, if I gave one chunk of cactus to 12 friends, and in a few years they gave one piece to 12 more friends, imagine how fast Terri’s cactus could spread. In fact, she told me that several other people she knows have cacti started from her plant.

As Christians, we are called to remain in the vine and produce fruit. One way we see the evidence of fruit is in disciples. John 15:8  tells us:

“This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

Bearing fruit to God’s glory is not found in the number of likes on a post that happens to have a Bible verse in it, not in the number of people who show up at our “church” event or the people who follow us/like us/or think we are really “nice”. Fruit isn’t measured the way society measures it at all. In fact, probably most numbers society uses for a gauge of success would demonstrate the exact opposite in the sense of bearing fruit that Jesus asks of us.

Jesus had his disciples. Paul had his team. Scripture speaks of a called-out body of people loving one another, teaching, edifying, building up, holding accountable, sharing, confessing sins, forgiving sins. We all have a circle of influence and relationships, and those relationships with followers of Jesus are the ones prioritized above all else in no uncertain terms.

Matthew 12:48-50

New International Version

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

If we are to call ourselves a Christian or follower of Christ, we had better seriously consider those we yoke ourselves with and recognize that our church family is our family. We all benefit from being discipled and from discipling and we have a responsibility to seek those with spiritual maturity and a shared relationship with God to grow alongside as brothers/sisters.

Justice, Mercy and Faith

Matthew 23

Now that Jesus has turned the tables against the Pharisees in their little word games, he turns his attention to the crowds and his disciples. He begins his final public speech and absolutely destroys the Pharisees. He rips into everything that the Pharisees do, calling them out for their pride and hypocrisy. He acknowledges that these men are the best minds when it comes to The Law; they know The Law backwards and forwards, but they are not good examples. In particular, he calls them out for neglecting the importance and weight of justice, mercy and faith. This is one distinction that sets followers of Jesus apart from followers of The Law.

Justice

Justice is the administration of law. Based on this definition, you would think that the Pharisees understood justice quite well. However, this definition has the connotation of the administration of law on the general population, not just in one’s personal life. What the pharisees got correct was righteousness in their private lives without achieving justice in their public life. Justice is law applied equally to everyone, while righteousness is law applied to yourself. The Pharisees look at themselves, see that they are following the law perfectly and commend themselves for it. The problem isn’t their piety, it’s their pride. God didn’t command them to follow the law so that they might puff themselves up and hold themselves in high regard, but rather to benefit all of society. This is justice. Righteous acts are not righteous because they benefit you alone, they are righteous because they benefit everyone around you.

Mercy

Not everyone can follow the law as closely as the Pharisees. Those men were men who dedicated themselves to the reading of scripture day in and day out. Living the law is the only thing that they know how to do. When they look on the masses and see sin: adultery (John 8:1-11), blasphemy (Mark 14:64), greed (Luke 19:7)…what they fail to see are people. People who fall short. People who don’t live the same lifestyle as the Pharisees. The Pharisees know the scriptures, but they don’t seem to remember how God showed the Israelites mercy time and time again. Instead, they turn their noses up at the sin that they see and tell themselves that they are above that. The truth is, no man is above sin except for Jesus himself. The Pharisees poured over their scriptures to make sure that they washed their hands before meals and tithe even their small incomes. They strained their water for gnats. But they swallowed a camel instead. They failed to show mercy. They failed to show people the mercy that their God showed to them.

Love

Love is at the center of Christianity. Jesus said in Matthew 22 that the two greatest commands are to love God and to love people. Apparently the Pharisees didn’t get that. They were too worried about appearing like God-loving individuals that they didn’t have the time to love God’s people. In doing so, they made all of their love for God worthless. If you only love God, you are neglecting one of the greatest commandments. It is as simple as that. Show your love for God by showing your love to His people.
